The apartments of the beautiful Chateau Vrchlabi take you back through a rich historical tapestry of Czech culture, to times when early settlers scoured the wild regions of the Krkonose Mountains for precious stones and metals.

The history of Vrchlabi dates back to the 13th century with the discovery of an old wooden fortress during the colonization of the region. In 1533, Vrchlabi was promoted to an independent town with its own rights, mainly thanks to the activities of Christopher von Gendorf, the royal senior captain for Ferdinand I. It soon grew to become one of the biggest and most progressive mining towns in the Bohemian region. In the second half of the 17th century there was a boom of slanetz (linen) processing and spinning mills and weavers began to susidise the mining of iron and minerals. With this the prosperity of the local textile industry began and an abundance of bleacheries, textile factories and textile printing workshops were established.

The Chateau Vrchlabi is thought to have been built in the 17th century serving as a guest house for friends of the Morzin family, later the Czernin-Morzin family. The family lived in the castle till 1945. These days the castle is used as a municipal office building. Chateau Vrchlabi is located directly next to the castle, amongs many of the other historical buildings which Vrchlab is proud to host.
